Senior/Staff Forward-Deployed Engineer (Mobile)
Posted 3 days ago
The role in short
Design, build, and maintain production-grade mobile applications and SDKs for digital identity and credentialing, working closely with government partners.
About SpruceID
SpruceID builds privacy-preserving, standards-based digital identity and credentialing solutions that give individuals control of their information while enabling governments and enterprises to deliver secure, interoperable services. We partner with public-sector organizations, including the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), to modernize how identity is issued, stored, presented, and verified.
We're looking for a Senior or Staff Forward-Deployed Engineer to help build and scale the next generation of digital identity experiences. You'll play a key technical role in developing secure, intuitive mobile applications and SDKs that enable people to use digital credentials in everyday interactions.
This role combines deep mobile engineering expertise, security-conscious architecture, and hands-on collaboration with government partners. You'll work at the intersection of mobile platforms, cryptography, open standards, and real-world deployments, helping deliver digital identity infrastructure that can serve millions of people.
This is a fully remote role open to candidates based in the United States.
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and maintain production-grade mobile applications for digital identity and credentialing, with a particular focus on initiatives supporting the government partners.
- Lead the development of secure digital identity wallets that enable individuals to receive, store, manage, and present digital credentials.
- Develop and maintain native iOS and/or Android applications, with a strong emphasis on platform capabilities, performance, reliability, security, and user experience.
- Architect and implement mobile features involving secure credential storage, device authentication, biometric authentication, cryptographic operations, and privacy-preserving data exchange.
- Integrate emerging identity standards into mobile applications and SDKs.
- Work with engineers, designers, product teams, and government partners to translate complex requirements into elegant, accessible mobile experiences.
- Build and maintain mobile integrations with backend APIs, identity issuance systems, credential verification services, and platform security features.
- Contribute to Rust-based shared libraries and cross-platform components that support secure identity functionality across mobile, backend, and browser environments.
- Own the mobile engineering lifecycle, from architecture and implementation through testing, release management, production monitoring, and ongoing improvements.
- Help establish mobile engineering best practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, observability, secure development, and application performance optimization.
- For Staff-level candidates, provide technical leadership across projects, drive architectural decisions, mentor engineers, and help define the long-term direction of SpruceID's mobile identity platform.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience building and shipping production mobile applications. Staff-level candidates should bring additional experience leading mobile architecture and major technical initiatives.
- Deep expertise in native iOS development (Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit) and/or native Android development (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Android SDK).
- Strong understanding of mobile application architecture, platform security, application lifecycle management, concurrency, performance, and reliability.
- Experience working with mobile security capabilities such as iOS Keychain, Secure Enclave, Android Keystore, hardware-backed key storage, or biometric authentication.
- Demonstrated ability to design and deliver complex, user-facing mobile applications from initial architecture through production deployment.
- Experience integrating mobile applications with backend services, APIs, and authentication systems.
- Familiarity with secure software development practices, cryptographic concepts, and protecting sensitive user information.
- Strong engineering judgment, ability to navigate ambiguity, and experience collaborating across engineering, product, design, and external stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs and architectural decisions to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Appreciation for open-source software, open standards, interoperability, and privacy-first product design.
- Based in the United States (remote) and excited to work on digital identity infrastructure with public-sector partners.
Nice to Have
- Experience developing mobile driver's licenses (mDLs), digital identity wallets, verifiable credential applications, or digital document solutions.
- Familiarity with ISO/IEC 18013-5, ISO/IEC 18013-7, W3C Verifiable Credentials, OpenID4VCI, OpenID4VP, or related digital identity standards.
- Experience implementing NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), QR code, or proximity-based credential exchange protocols.
- Understanding of public key cryptography, PKI, certificate validation, digital signatures, key management, and device attestation.
- Experience integrating Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or other platform-level digital credential capabilities.
- Familiarity with Rust, including integrating shared Rust libraries into native mobile applications through FFI or other cross-language bindings.
- Experience with cross-platform mobile development using React Native, Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or similar technologies.
- Knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, passkeys, WebAuthn, or federated identity systems.
- Experience designing mobile SDKs or reusable libraries consumed by other engineering teams or external partners.
- Experience with App Store and Google Play release management, mobile CI/CD, automated testing, crash reporting, and production observability.
- Familiarity with accessibility best practices, including WCAG, Section 508, VoiceOver, and TalkBack.
- Prior experience working in government technology, regulated industries, financial services, or other security-sensitive environments.
- Contributions to open-source projects or participation in digital identity standards communities such as W3C, OpenID Foundation, IETF, or ISO.

Prep for this interview
4 questions likely to come up at SpruceID, each matched to a line in this posting.
- 1Integrations and APIs
They wrote: “Build and maintain mobile integrations with backend APIs, identity issuance systems, credential verification services, and platform security features.”
Walk me through connecting our product to a customer's internal system that has no documentation.
How to answer
Why they ask: This happens weekly in the job. They want a calm, step-by-step method.
- Find who owns the system and get read access to a test environment
- Watch real traffic or logs to learn the data shapes
- Build a thin adapter with logging around every call
- Agree on how failures get reported, and who fixes what
Tip: Talk about finding the owner of the system first. The code is the easy part.
- 2Discovery and scoping
They wrote: “Work with engineers, designers, product teams, and government partners to translate complex requirements into elegant, accessible mobile experiences.”
Tell me about a time the customer asked for one thing but needed another.
How to answer
Why they ask: Good FDEs spot when a request is a guess at a solution. They want proof you can redirect a customer without losing their trust.
- What they asked for, and the detail that made you doubt it
- How you tested the doubt (shadowed users, looked at logs, ran a quick prototype)
- How you made the case to the customer
- What shipped and what changed for them
Tip: Pick a story where you checked your hunch with data or users before pushing back.
- 3Cloud, deployment and security
They wrote: “Develop and maintain native iOS and/or Android applications, with a strong emphasis on platform capabilities, performance, reliability, security, and user experience.”
The customer's security team sends a 200-question review. How do you handle it?
How to answer
Why they ask: Security reviews often block deals. FDEs help get through them.
- Start from your company's standard answers (SOC 2 report, past reviews)
- Answer clearly; don't oversell
- Bring in your security team for anything you're unsure of
- Keep the new answers for the next customer
Tip: Reuse past answers, flag honest gaps, and offer a call for the hard questions.
- 4Ownership and working with customers
They wrote: “Strong engineering judgment, ability to navigate ambiguity, and experience collaborating across engineering, product, design, and external stakeholders.”
Tell me about a project where the requirements kept changing. What did you do?
How to answer
Why they ask: Ambiguity is the norm. They want proof you can keep moving without a clear spec.
- The project and why requirements kept moving
- What you did to pin them down (short demos, written decisions)
- The trade-offs you made to keep shipping
- The result, with a number if you have one
Tip: Show how you reduced the change, beyond how you coped with it.
